This website was created to mark the closure of the activities of the
Chief Rabbi Memorial Foundation after 15 years.

Remembering the work, life and legacy of Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris (1936-2005)

Cyril Harris believed that being a Jew meant engaging with the world and its issues. He lived out his faith with a strong social conscience and high moral standards, tirelessly working with others to address social ills.

During his time as Chief Rabbi of South Africa, he made a lasting impression and inspired many, inside and outside the Jewish community with whom he worked to build and nurture society.

After he passed away in 2005, a small group of his friends  established a charitable foundation to honour his memory and  to carry on his work in a way of which he would have approved. Over the fifteen years that followed, the Foundation has assisted many organisations to train professional staff in fields in which Rabbi Harris had a special interest and affection. After fifteen years, practical considerations have led the Foundation to wind down operations.

This website continues to exist as a tribute in memory of Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris, as well as to record the work of  the Foundation in preserving  the legacy of this exceptional man in a most meaningful way.
